Read the operator’s manual for each machine used during your job to ensure safe use. Once you have read the manual, familiarize yourself with the machine’s functions.
Dial 811 before you dig to identify utility line locations. Without proper knowledge of where these are located, it can be easy to accidentally damage water, electricity or natural gas lines in an area.
Protective gear is essential. Be sure everyone on the site is wearing a hard hat, safety glasses, earplugs, steel toed boots, gloves and any other equipment the job requires.
Machine exhausts can generate harmful gasses in the air. Use gas monitors on site for easy detection and always ensure proper ventilation, so fresh air is available.
Be sure to inspect all your equipment before you begin your job. Check for loose parts or places where chemicals may leak. Also check all safety equipment for any form of weakness.
Make sure the jobsite is properly cleaned up. Set up safety measures—like barricades and fences—around open pits to avoid pedestrian accidents. Make sure any chemicals or hazardous materials are properly disposed. Use a vandalism shield on your machine to avoid tampering.
